This imposing porcelain figure represents Guan Yu, one of Chinas most legendary historical and spiritual figures a warrior, general, and later a deified symbol of loyalty, justice, and protection. Often referred to as the God of War, Guan Yu is also a revered patron of law, brotherhood, and honourable conduct. This exceptional mid-century rendering reflects the strength of his character with commanding posture, finely painted features, and a traditional polearm held firmly in hand.
Measuring approximately 40 cm in height, with a base of 14.5 cm x 14.5 cm, this authentic Shiwan porcelain figure stands tall with remarkable weight and presence. His robes are richly glazed in hues of red, teal, and amber with gold lustre detailing that evokes traditional enamelwork, and his face is meticulously hand-painted a hallmark of high-quality studio work from the Shiwan kilns in Guangdong, China, during the 1960s70s export era. The figure includes his long polearm weapon (approximately 33 cm long), crafted separately to emphasize detail and scale.
An unusual and culturally significant feature of this figure is the removable left hand, sculpted with a pointing gesture that can be adjusted to face in different directions. This is likely symbolic pointing gestures in Chinese iconography often imply command, spiritual protection, or directional blessing. The option to position the hand may have allowed collectors or practitioners to align the figure's energy toward a door, altar, or specific space within the home. This dynamic feature distinguishes the piece as more than decorative: it carries interactive and spiritual intent.
The base of the figure is clearly marked, featuring a full suite of impressed and painted identifiers. Most notably, it bears the incised Chinese characters (Guǎngdōng Shíwān), confirming its origin as an authentic Shiwan ware piece from the renowned kilns of Guangdong province. Additional red-painted triangular stamps, a numerical code (120), and other factory or workshop indicators support mid-century dating and align with markings used by high-quality artisan potteries of the period.
