Guava Tree Seeds. The guava is a shrub or small tree which grows 2 to 8 m tall. Guavas are a group of tropical trees in the Psidium genus that produce delicious fruit. When cultivated it is usually pruned back to about 2 to 3 m. Trees that are not pruned, usually flower during October. When they are pruned, the period of full bloom is 10 to 12 weeks after pruning. Bees are the main pollinators, but self-pollination also occurs.

Guava trees can be planted in containers and will produce fruit with no issues. Guavas are high in vitamin C. The trees give good shade because they do not lose their leaves in winter. It loves the South African weather and I have found that guava trees planted from seed produces fruit in as little as two to three years if they are given enough water. I have successfully grown multiple guava trees from seed and was amazed at how productive the tree is in such a short space of time, even when planted in containers. I highly recommend the guava tree as the perfect fruit tree to plant in any sized garden as well as in containers if you do not have space for a formal garden.

Growing Gauva Tree
  • Guava Tree Seeds can take up to eight weeks to germinate, so you have to be patient.
  • Soak the seeds in warm water prior to planting, to soften the tough outside and encourage germination.
  • Fill a 4-inch nursery pot with seed starting mix.
  • Press one guava seed into the center of the pot. Use your thumb to gently press the seed under the soil, and cover it with a little bit of the starting mix.
  • Soak the pot with water using a gentle misting spray or the soak setting on the hose, to avoid disrupting the seed.
  • Place the container in a warm place with temperatures around 18C or above.
  • The seeds should germinate in 2-8 weeks depending upon the temperature.
