Offered for sale is a limited edition signed lithograph or serigraph by famous German born South African artist Gunther Van Der Reis. The subject is typical of his work, an abstract landscape study with bold interlocking geometric and organic forms a detailed and subtle surface treatment and limited /reduced colour palette in this case black on a cream/off white coloured paper. Van Der Reis was a major figure in the South African avant garde art world from the 1950's to the 1980's , he exhibited extensively locally and overseas and achieved an international reputation, representing South Africa at various Art Biennales in Venice and Sau Paolo as well as exhibiting in Lisbon and the USA. He was born in Hamburg Germany in 1927 and emmigrated to South Africa in the 1930's. He studied at the Michaelis Art School UCT and the University of Pretoria attaining a BAFA and MA in Fine Art. He worked at various art schools and Technikons until around 1988 when he became a full time professional artist. His work is represented in most major public and corporate art museums including the National Gallery in CapeTown, The Johannesburg Art Gallery, University Collections including Wits ,UJ and UCT and the Rupert Foundation. Van Der Reis was strongly influenced by the texture conscious abstract innovations of the Matiere painters (Matter Painters) and Arte Povera movement in particular the work of the Spanish modernist Antonio Tapies. He brought this influence to fruition in marvelous paintings and prints conveying the intrinsic qualities of the South African landscape especially the Karoo. His avowed subject was the "metaphysics of matter " reflected in artworks mostly landscape orientated with an abstract element.
