This book is the third of 3 volumes of autobiography -  Karoo Morning (1977), Bursting World (1983) and A Local Habitation (1991). He edited the memoirs and diaries of colonial settlers, and was much involved in the theatre.  His first theatrical production of the frontier colony became the subject of Cape Charade; or Kaatje Kekkelbek (1968) with illus in book.
