The aptly named HMS Victory is arguably the most famous of all the British vessels as Lord Horatio Nelson's flagship in the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Launched in 1765, she is a 104-gun first-rate ship of the line.
She was variously Keppel's flagship at Ushant, Howe's flagship at Cape Spartel and Jervis's flagship at Cape St Vincent. On 16 May 1803 Vice-Admiral Nelson hoisted his flag in Victory.
Her most celebrated battle, where Nelson sent out the now famous line England expects every man to do his duty, and where virtually the entire Napoleonic fleet was destroyed, has her forever remembered. HMS Victory carried Nelson's body back to London where he lay in wake at Greenwich.
After serving in various capacities she was moved to dry dock at Portsmouth and set up as a museum. To this day she serves as the flagship of the Second Sea Lord, and is the oldest naval ship still in commission.
