About Habranthus robustus "Pink Lightning"
Habranthus is a genus in the Amaryllidaceae family with the species robusta indigenous to Brazil and Argentina. Habranthus belongs to a group known as rain or storm lilies, because soaking rain, following a period of drought triggers flowering. This can be quite sudden, and spectacular, as depending on the size of your population, several hundred buds may litterally come up in joyous celebration overnight.
The bulbs multiply quite fast, and can be left in the ground, even in areas that experience heavy frost. (Hardiness zone 9) In fact, any area were the ground doesn't actually freeze is ideal, as long as the soil is not too alkaline (ph 6 - 7.5 is ideal).
In the garden, flowering flushes can be artificially triggered almost continuously throughout summer, by varying your watering schedule. Instructions on how to do this will be given in the growing guide. The large Hippeastrum-like flowers all face in the same direction and give a charming effect, especially in dense plantings.
