Hallmarked Sterling Silver Vesta Case by William Henry Sparrow (  dated 1911)

A true turn of the Century treasure indeed!

This gorgeous filigree patterned  match safe or 'Vesta' case was made by William Henry Sparrow of Birmingham, and can be dated to 1911.

The hallmark is visible underneath the lid along the side of the case.

It reads 'WHS', the makers mark of William Henry Sparrow, followed by the Anchor mark for Birmingham and the left facing Lion passant.

Such items are rare and highly collectible.

These match  holders, also known as 'matchsafes' or 'vesta cases', date to the mid-19th century, when friction matches were first introduced. Early friction matches, which were also called 'vestas' and 'Lucifers' were prone to bursting into flame in a user’s pocket. Matchsafes keep these hair-trigger fire sticks from rubbing together and combusting prematurely.

The golden age of matchsafes was around 1870 until the 1930s, when matchbooks and cigarette lighters obviated the need for most match holders.

There are no dents in the surface of the item at all. There is a very minor deviation to the edge of lid, although the lid still closes securely. The case is in very good condition for its age. The edge of the lid has a slight up - curving  'lip' that aids the opening of the lid with the thumb.
