This is a Nayaka Ivory from India , likely to be 17th to 18th century and likely carved in workshops in the Kaveri basin of Tamil Nadu in India.
Amazing intricate carving on ivory , painstaking work. Solid ivory, not resin or a modern copy.
Here shown are the Hindu Gods Shiva and Varvati seated on the bull Nandi. They are surrounded by a large number of other figures. At top are celestial garland bearers ( cherubic figures ). At bottom are dwarfish attendants , ganas. There are three horned figures associated with Shiva on the sides. There are also small elephants on each side and a two figures that look like tigers on the left hand side. Shiva is holding a trident, and as Lord of All Creatures has a cobra snake in one of his hands. Shiva looks to have four arms. Varvati holds a flower.
This object stands of its own accord and was probably intended for worship in a household shrine.
Stands 17 cm high and 10 cm wide at the base.
Overall in very good condition. See photographs. There is much evidence of age and signs of minor damage to one of Shiva's arms. That part could be repaired if desired.
