Hand-Painted Majolica Ewer, Basin, and Holder Set - Romano 

Embrace timeless elegance with this exquisite 3-piece majolica set, hand-painted by the skilled potter Romano. This set includes an ewer, basin, and ceramic holder with a lid, each adorned with delicate flower decorations in the center and dark brown (almost black) lines, reminiscent of splatterware, along the top and bottom.

Crafted with care, this set showcases Romano's mastery of majolica pottery, featuring definitive glazing and subtle splatterware details. While the glaze on the outside is minimal, the structural integrity of the set remains intact, adding to its vintage charm.

The basin measures 28.5cm in diameter and 8.5cm high, with an impressed mark underlined "FB 5 ," weighing 1176g. The ewer stands 24.5cm high, with a width of 22cm from handle to spout, weighing 1427g. The holder with lid measures 36cm high and 15cm in diameter, weighing 1895g.

Please note, that there is grazing on all the items and the ewer exhibits a hairline crack under the glaze, not detectable with fingernails, and appears to have undergone a previous small chip repair. Despite these minor imperfections, the set remains in good condition, ready to add a touch of vintage sophistication to your home décor.

These Ewers and basins, also known as washbasins and pitchers, were particularly popular in bedrooms during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was before indoor plumbing became widespread in homes. Houses during this time typically did not have bathrooms connected to the bedrooms, so people used washstands with pitchers (ewers) and basins for personal hygiene routines like washing hands, face, or even small personal items.
The popularity of this practice peaked in the Victorian era (1837-1901) and continued into the early 20th century, gradually declining as indoor plumbing became more common and accessible. By the mid-20th century, most homes were equipped with bathrooms, rendering the use of washstands and pitchers less necessary.
