This specific type of craft, known as Zulu telephone wire weaving, is a traditional art form of the Zulu people . What you see is a modern adaptation of a craft that was originally created for practical purposes, but has now become a form of artistic expression.
The weaving is done using thin, brightly colored PVC-coated copper wire, which was originally sourced from discarded telephone and electrical cables. The craft began in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when male security guards in South Africa would weave the wire into objects while on duty, and it has since grown into a thriving industry.
The designs are often geometric patterns, like the zigzags on the bottle, or swirling, circular patterns, as seen on the bottom of the bottle and on the cap. The vibrant colors and precise patterns are characteristic of this art form.
