Matryoshka dolls is also known as stacking dolls or nesting dolls, Russian tea dolls, or Russian dolls, and are a set of wooden dolls (from 4 to 8) of decreasing size placed one inside another.
MATRYOSKA DOLLS: Did you know Matryoshka is just 130 years old? In fact, it only appeared in 1890 - and it has real authors, Vasily Zvezdochkin and painter Sergei Malutin. Both men worked at the Savva Mamontov workshop for kids. Mamontov was a famous Russian industrialist, merchant and patron of the arts. According to one version of Matryoshkas creation, the wife of Mamontov once brought a wooden figure to the workshop. It depicted a Japanese wise man and contained five figurines of his students inside. Inspired by this multi-layer idea, Zvezdochkin carved eight wooden figures, and Malutin painted them. Every matryoshka doll is hand crafted. It takes a master up to 15 steps working on a piece of wood before it became a matryoshka. Russian dolls are typically crafted from linden or birch and the process starts with the smallest seed doll, which is lathed from a solid piece of wood. The ensuing dolls should ideally be made from one single piece of wood to ensure they all fit together correctly: the expansion, contraction and moisture content of each piece of wood is unique. Once carved, the dolls are oiled to retain moisture. They are then surfaced with a glue primer before their ornamental decorations are painted on by hand. Near the Russian-China border, in the Chinese city of Manzhouli, is a mall and amusement park called Matryoshka with officially the biggest Russian doll in the world. Its height is a whopping 30 meters. The main Matryoshka is surrounded by eight smaller dolls and 200 even smaller figures. Sadly, the vast majority of modern Matryoshkas are now made in China. In Russia, dolls are still produced in some villages in Nizhny Novgorod. There's a believe that if you put a note with a wish into a matryoshka it'll come true. Use the most beautiful one.
