THE PLATYPUS, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS THE DUCK-BILLED PLATYPUS, IS A SEMIAQUATIC, EGG-LAYING MAMMAL ENDEMIC TO EASTERN AUSTRALIA, INCLUDING TASMANIA. THE PLATYPUS IS THE SOLE LIVING REPRESENTATIVE OF ITS FAMILY AND GENUS, THOUGH A NUMBER OF RELATED SPECIES APPEAR IN THE FOSSIL RECORD. THE PLATYPUS IS ARGUABLY ONE OF THE MOST REMARKABLE SPECIES ON EARTH. THIS EGG-LAYING, DUCK-BILLED, BEAVER-TAILED, OTTER-FOOTED MAMMAL BAFFLED EUROPEAN NATURALISTS WHEN THEY FIRST ENCOUNTERED IT, WITH SOME CONSIDERING IT AN ELABORATE HOAX. There are only five species of monotreme (egg laying mammals) in the world all found only in Australia and New Guinea including the platypus, and four species of Echidna. Monotremes are also characterised by a primitive skeleton, very similar to that of long-extinct mammals, which suggests that monotremes are actually very ancient creatures. The platypus bill is similar to that of a duck in appearance, but for the platypus, it is used as a sensory organ. When diving, they close their eyes and block their ears and nose, using only the bill to locate prey underwater. Males are equipped with a keratin spur about 12-18 millimetres long, tucked away on their inner hind ankle. This spur produces a clear, sticky venomused for protection when attacked by predators and to compete with other males for mates. Their venom is strong enough to kill a dog (their main predators), and while it isnt fatal to humans, it causes excruciating pain that lasts several weeks and is not effectively relieved by analgesics such as morphine. The venom is made up of 19 different compounds, and is thought to be entirely different in make-up from snakes venom.
