Diamond's hardness of 10 is a historical fact, but its history of cutting began as early as the 14th century with the simple point cut and evolved to more complex styles like the table cut in the 15th century. Major developments include the pear cut by Lodewyk van Bercken in 1458, the rose cut, and later the Mazarin cut (a precursor to the brilliant cut) in the 17th century. These advancements were driven by the need to improve the appearance of rough diamonds and, eventually, to create maximum sparkle.
