Mt-Gen Sir Henry Somerset fought in the Peninsula War and at Waterloo. In 1818 he sailed for Cape Colony in South Africa where for 30 years he rode unceasingly about the border and in so doing gained unrivalled knowledge of the Boers and Briton settlers, the Hottentots and Fingos, the Xhosas and the Fetcani. Personally responsible for good order on the frontier he participated in every K----r War from 1819-1852 when he was transferred to India.
