Ultrasonic ranging module HC-SR04 provides 2cm - 400cm non-contact measurement. The ranging accuracy can reach 3mm. The module includes an ultrasonic transmitter and receiver as well as control circuitry.
The basic principle of how the module works:
- Pull the Trig pin high for at least 10us.
- The module sends a 40 kHz pulse and detects whether there is a return pulse.
- If there is a return pulse, based on the distance from the module the Echo pin will have a specific duration where the pin will be in a high state.
- Distance can then be calculated using formula Distance = (high level time × speed of sound (340m/s) / 2
Easy interfacing to a microcontroller as follows:
- VCC - 5V Supply
- Trig - Pulse Input
- Echo - Pulse Output
- GND - Ground
The HC-SR04 is good choice. Its stable performance and high ranging accuracy make it a popular module in the electronic market. Compared to the Sharp IR ranging module, the HC-SR04 is inexpensive but has the same ranging accuracy with a longer ranging distance.
