It takes a high-definition digital signal (HDMI) and downscales it into a standard-definition composite or RGB analog signal (SCART), automatically adjusting resolutions and aspect ratios to ensure compatibility.

Function of the converter

Modern media players output video at resolutions like 1080p or 4K with a 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Old CRT televisions and early flat-screen displays using the European SCART standard typically handle a standard-definition resolution (480i or 576i) and often expect a 4:3 aspect ratio.

The auto scaler component is crucial because it does more than just adapt the physical plug shape:

• Active downscaling: it actively processes the dense digital pixel grid of an HDMI input and compresses it into the standard 576i (PAL) or 480i (NTSC) analog lines required by SCART.
• Automatic resolution detection: the internal chipset detects the incoming HDMI resolution (whether it is 720p, 1080i, or 1080p) and automatically converts it on the fly without requiring manual configuration from the user.
• Audio de-embedding: HDMI carries both digital audio and video on a single cable. The scaler extracts this digital audio, converts it to an analog stereo signal (Left/Right), and routes it into the appropriate pins on the SCART output.
