Book still in a good condition even though it belonged to a library before - Wrapper very good as it was protected in heavy duty plastic - Contains photo illustrations and diagrams.   >>>   Rommel's War In Africa was a easy 4 Star history of Rommel’s campaigns in Africa up until El Alamein. The book begins with his arrival in North Africa and ends with Rommel’s forces falling back from El Alamein, never to go so far east again. One outstanding feature is the excellent tactical maps he uses. He even includes a relief drawing of the Tobruk area, showing how the terrain related to the battle. Overall, a very enjoyable read.   -   This book was written by a German vet for the Germans and translated later into English. Heckmann’s main purpose was to reduce the “superhuman” status of Rommel hero worship down to a more realistic level. He posits three major reasons why Rommel was on so high a pedestal:

1) Rommel was a glory hog and an avid self-promoter with a direct line to Hitler, going right past the general staff to get his resources and attention. Rommel understood public relations and how to get “good press.”

2) Rommel was lucky in opponents: the British tactics and equipment (prior to Montgomery getting there) were substandard while Rommel’s gambles, while spectacular at first, were doomed to eventual failure due as he overstepped his support. Rommel was “overrated” as a general and not all that brilliant.

3) The British needed to explain the great losses in the desert and why not attribute it to the excellent German opponent rather than poor performance of own forces. Later, after the war, the surviving German generals also kept Rommel’s reputation clean…a good soldier not tainted by the atrocities in other theaters. Of course, Churchill and Monty reputations could be enhanced by painting their opponent as a genius.   (Mike on Goodreads)
