Stephen D. France, Hansons creator and the first to use the house pen name, was the sole author of the books from 1946 to 1953, and occasionally contributed to the canon until 1959, but by then the public demand was so great that other writers were soon invited onboard the gravy train, including D. F. Crawley, Harry Hobson, Victor George Charles Norwood and James Moffatt.
