Hardcover printed in 1972 by The Natal Witness (Pty) Ltd. Light wear and foxing of the jacket, small chip on the rear panel, and it is now protected in cellophane. Original red cloth with printed black titling. Pictorial endpapers, these being a street plan of Pietermaritzburg, the rear ones a map of eastern South Africa. 22 pages of preliminaries, 517 pages including bibliography, family tables and index. Illustrated with several black and white photographs, and one colour portrait with overlay. Signed on the copyright page by Amy Young.
