Henri Matisse prophetically wrote that a trip to South Africa would be something extraordinary and miraculous (Fourcade and Monod-Fontaine 2000, 236). That extraordinary moment arrived in 2016 when, for the first time evernot merely in South Africa but also on the African continenta full-scale exhibition of Matisses art was held at the Standard Bank Gallery in Johannesburg, entitled Henri Matisse: Rhythm and Meaning.
