VERY RARE ANTIQUE 1920S HERMANN STEINER BISQUE BABY DOLL NO 240

ANTIQUE 1920-30'S BABY DOLL NO 240 BY HERMANN STEINER, MADE IN GERMANY!!  HERMANN STEINER HEAD INSCRIPTION AND LOGO ON THIS VERY RARE DOLL!!
 
This is a german socket head bisque baby doll by Maker: Hermann Steiner of Sonneberg and Neustadt, Bavaria c. 1920, stamped no. 240. The hollow moulded head with hand-painted eyelashes and red painted lips over a stitched and stuffed cloth body, attached composition arms and legs and cute plastic hands, wearing an embroidered white cotton and lace dress.
 
The maker was the company Herman Steiner. Hermann Steiner of Sonneberg and Neustadt, Germany and in Bavaria, entered the doll market at the end of the German bisque doll era and began producing dolls around 1910. They are probably best know for their character baby or infant dolls, which were the doll of choice, at that time.

Steiner's models had a total of 15 different molds.  My doll is mold number 240.  It is a Baby Character Doll like most of his dolls at that time.  It appears from what limited photographs there are of this doll that mold number 240 has the bisque head with composite jointed body and plastic hands.

STEINER'S MARKINGS, IF YOU LOOK AT THE BABY'S BACK HEAD DETAIL PICTURE, LOOKED LIKE THIS )S(  I LOVE HIS SIGNATURE, THE ) (  STOOD FOR "H" HERMAN AND IT CLOSED IN THE "S" FOR STEINER.  PRETTY COOL HUH!

BISQUE AND COMPOSITION:
Many antique German bisque (unglazed porcelain fired at relative low temperatures) dolls from the 19th century combine a bisque head with a ball-jointed body made of composition (composed of sawdust, glue, and other materials such as cornstarch, resin and wood flour). Bisque dolls are characterized by their realistic, skin-like matte finish. They had their peak of popularity between 1860 and 1900 with French and German dolls. Bisque dolls are collectible, and antique dolls can be worth thousands of dollars.

CONDITION:
FOR ALMOST 100 YEARS OF AGE SHE IS IN GOOD CONDITION! EYELIDS ARE WORNOUT A BIT AND THE ORIGINAL SLEEPING BLUE EYES ARE MISSING. Bisque head on cloth body. Body is hard stuffed with wood-wool. Lover part of arms made of composition. with all fingers in tact. Painted eyelashes, eyebrows, red painted closed mouth, red dots inside of nostrils still to be seen.

HERMANN STEINER OF SONNEBERG AND NEUSTADT, GERMANY AND IN BAVARIA, ENTERED THE DOLL MARKET AT THE END OF THE GERMAN BISQUE DOLL ERA AND BEGAN PRODUCING DOLLS AROUND 1920.  THEY ARE PROBABLY BEST KNOW FOR THEIR CHARACTER BABY OR INFANT DOLLS, WHICH WERE THE DOLL OF CHOICE, AT THAT TIME. 
H. STEINER PRODUCED BISQUE, COMPOSITION AND CELLULOID DOLL HEADS WITH GLASS OR PAINTED EYES, MOLDED HAIR OR WIGGED WITH A BODY OF CLOTH, KID LEATHER OR COMPOSITION, BLACK OR WHITE DOLLS. USUALLY MARKED: HS GERMANY, 240, 245, 246, 401. 
VALUE: Bisque dolls are collectible, and antique dolls can be worth thousands of dollars.
