Dames Rocket [ Hesperis Matronalis ] is a beautiful, short-lived perennial with large, loose clusters of fragrant deep rich purple, through all the paler lilac shades to white flowers. The fragrance is sweet, and most pronounced in the evening. If you leave the flowers to seed themselves, they will keep this diversity indefinitely, gradually naturalizing over a large area.
Dames Rocket [ Hesperis Matronalis ] likes moist conditions for optimal growing, but it is adaptable. It was introduced from Europe as an ornamental plant and has been grown in gardens since the Roman Empire. It is the excellent plant for meadows, naturalized areas or cottage gardens. Habitats include woodland edges and openings, thickets, semi-shaded fence rows, banks of drainage ditches, vacant lots, and edges of yards.
The plant has fragrant flowers.
The plant is attractive to bees, butterflies and birds.
