Hesperis matronalis Seeds

Common Names: Dame's Rocket, Garden Rocket, Dame's Violet, Mother-Of-The-Evening, Sweet Rocket

Often confused with phlox, this highly fragrant flower is from Europe where it is commonly seen in road ditches and in the light shade of nearby trees. Its heady scent is an attraction to bees, butterflies and birds. This spring blooming wildflower can be found in shades of lavender, violet, and white, some being a variegated intermediate between the two. All these lovely features make this an attractive, hardy species to add to your collection! Blooms second and successive seasons from expanding clumps. Dames Rocket was the favorite flower of Marie Antoinette. The genus name Hesperis is Greek for evening, a reference to this plant's aroma becoming ever more conspicuous towards evening. The fragrance is as sweet as a violet's. The night-scented stock is a close relative. The plants typically produce only a low-lying rosette their first year, in subsequent years, Dame's Rocket shoots up quickly in spring and enters full bloom by October.
