Highland Light Infantry Cap Badge
According to an internet source, this badge is made of white metal and was worn by the Other Ranks of the Highland Light Infantry. It depicts the star of the Order of the Thistle (a St. Andrew's Cross with rays between the arms), underneath a royal crown. Superimposed on the cross is the regiment's monogram "HLI" within the image of a bugle horn. Below the bugle horn is a scroll that says, "Assaye" and the Highland Light Infantry's mascot, an elephant (both likely commemorate the regiment's actions at the Battle of Assay in 1803). During World War I, Highland Light Infantry battalions fought both on the Western Front and in the Mesopotamian/Iraqi campaign.
