This is a moving and graphic biography of the great Moshesh, founder and potentate of the Basotho nation of South Africa. His life forms a striking contrast to the subjects of Dr Peter Beckers earlier biographies. For while they Shaka Zulu, Dingane, Mzilikazi and others were autocrats who invariably ruled by fear, Moshesh was wise and kindly, a leader whose exploits were renowned not only throughout Southern Africa, but in countries beyond the seas.Of humble origing, he came into prominence as a leader during Difaqane, the Dark age of South African tribal history. Fleeing from the bloodthirsty armies of the female conqueror Mantatisi, Moshesh and a handful of followers found sanctuary on Thaba Bosiu a precipitous, flat-topped hill which he soon converted into an impregnable fortress. There the Basuto nation was born.
