Small Head

1929 sovereigns have a new smaller head portrait of King George V. The earlier portrait had been used from 1911 to 1928 inclusive, the small head portrait was used from 1929 to 1932 inclusive, making these quite desirable from a type collectors point of view.

Redesigned Reverse

It's easy to overlook the fact that the reverse was also substantially different on these new, smaller head, sovereigns. The St. George and dragon design was re-engraved and smaller. It is worthwhile and interesting to compare both reverse types next to each other.

The "SA" mintmark denotes the Pretoria Mint in South Africa.
