Irene Taylor Fynn is an activist, educator, and conflict resolution mediator. She was born and raised in Wentworth, Durban, during a time marked by the intense prevalence of gangsterism.
As the sixth of seven siblings, Irene felt an early desire to rise above her environment and the limited prospects it seemed to impose. While the world around her was confined, she envisioned a horizon beyond what was immediately visible. She fueled her aspirations by asking questions; finding escape and inspiration in books, and relentlessly pursuing personal growth. As a single mother of three, Irenes journey was marked by strength and resilience. She became a force in community development, driven by a determination to protect and nurture her children. "I had to press aggressively to survive," Irene reflects. "I couldnt sit passively and wait for change. I confronted many fears for the sake of my children - I did it afraid. Some things have to be done, despite the presence of fear." For Irene and many women before her, self-worth often came only after enduring hardship, whether through abuse, rejection, or neglect. She is committed to reversing this narrative for future generations, advocating for a world where young women and men understand their intrinsic value from the outset. My losses were painful but necessary for my growth, she shares. Gods love pursued me, no matter the challenges I faced.
