Hippeastrum papilio (Butterfly Amaryllis) – Dry Bulb

Hippeastrum papilio the butterfly amaryllis. Striking orchid-like blooms, white to creamy-green striated with maroon, resembling the wings of a swallowtail butterfly. Strong, dark-green strap-shaped foliage. Originally from the forests of southern Brazil, and grown as an epiphyte in the wild was considered extinct in habitat until rediscovered in the 1990s.

Flowers from late winter into early spring, and can bloom twice a year once established. Plant with the top third of the bulb ("head and shoulders") above the soil line, in well-draining potting mix or garden soil. Best in semi-shade morning sun, afternoon shade is ideal. Water regularly once growing, but let the surface dry out between waterings; give it a short rest of a few weeks in mid-summer. Comes back and multiplies year after year if left undisturbed.

Note: can cause an upset stomach if ingested, and is toxic to dogs, cats and horses keep away from pets and children.
