Great Britain King Charles II Silver Crown 1671 Tertio.Dia. 38mm,weight 29.8grams,.925 Silver
The first of 2 items that are very significant from a Numismatic history perspective on offer this month is the 1671 Silver Crown from the reign of King CharlesII
Charles' reign marked the final change in the appearance of English coinage as the medeival hammer-and-anvil method was abandoned in favour of the screw and roll presses. For protection against shearing or clipping a raised edge, often with an inscription was also introduced. The inscription on this Crown is Tertio.
CharlesII also cemented the custom of each successive monarch facing the opposite direction. He succeeded Oliver Cromwell ,who beheaded his father Charles I and definately did not wanted to face the same direction as Cromwell.
On top of all these developments it is alleged that it was his mistress,Frances Stewart later to become Duchess of Richmond, who was used as the model for the depiction of Britannia Rules the Waves that was used on the Reverse of the Pennies of that era and was continued to be used well into the 20th century as well as on the first seven sided 50-pence piece of 1971.
Crowns from this era also have a large collector base as they were also used as currency in the American Colonies.
The crown of offer is VF in my opinion with a small X scratch next to the harp.On the whole it is a nice coin with all the details and lettering still clearly visible and will benefit from professional cleaning.
Catalog value is GBP 600 in VF and GBP 100 in F.
