Nelson's great victory at Trafalgar in 1805 ensured Britain's dominant role in Maritime affairs for almost a century. By 1900, however, the Royal Novay was to face new problems and challenges. The rise of Germany as a rival led to a dramatic expansion of the Edwardian navy which in turn saw the introduction of the all-big gun dreadnought battleship, the move from steam to oil and the concentration of the Fleet in home waters for the coming struggle in the North Sea. World War I brought a mixure of success and disappointment, including the failure to defeat the german Fleet in a major sea battle, but many valuable lessons were learned and later put to good use.
