The parliamentarian and cabinet minister Jan Hendrik Hofmeyr was Paton's personal friend. Paton saw him as arguably the most brilliant person in South Africa's history, decent, moderate and deeply religious in the best sense of the word. He was viewed as the natural successor to Prime Minister Jan Smuts but died tragically when he was only 54. This is the only biography Paton has written. With black and white photographs and an index.
First published 1964 under this title by Oxford University Press. Condition good. Brown stain on first and last flyleaf. Foxing on some front and back pages. Light wear and tear on hardboard edges. No jacket.
