Home Run: Return to South Africa is the final published work of respected Underberg author and historian Michael Clark, released posthumously in 2025 after his death. Although written by Clark himself, the manuscript remained unpublished during his lifetime, making this moving memoir both a historical document and a fitting tribute to a man whose life became deeply intertwined with the Southern Drakensberg.

Home Run recounts Michael Clark's remarkable return to South Africa in 1959 after years spent travelling and working abroad in occupations as diverse as commercial fishing, lumber camps, construction, ranch work and oil exploration. Settling in the Underberg district, he became a well-known figure whose influence extended throughout the community and surrounding mountain regions.

Beyond autobiography, Home Run captures the rich history and character of the Southern Drakensberg through chapters covering the Sani Pass, Himeville Hotel, Pack Horse Inn, Dieu Donne Estates, Lesotho, conservation, tourism, flying, local personalities and the area's unique heritage. It provides an engaging blend of personal recollections, regional history and colourful stories that will appeal to anyone with an interest in KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho, Africana or mountain history.

This is the true first edition, privately published in Durban in 2025, and is especially desirable because only 200 copies were printed, making Home Run a scarce modern South African publication from the moment of release. Copies are expected to become increasingly difficult to obtain.

An excellent addition to collections of South African local history, Drakensberg literature, travel writing, memoirs and Africana.
