This children's book consists of ten stories about caring and human compassion. The stories are suitable for reading aloud to a child or a group of children (5-9 years). The author deals sensitively with delicate issues in an age- appropriate
manner and with a gentle sense of humor to inspire hope. The book aims to increase awareness of children's life circumstances and to cultivate empathy.

At Hoopoe Land, the children in teacher Nancy's class have their own narratives that happen within a multi-cultural South African context. Their circumstances vary from trauma (a taxi accident, xenophobia, a house burning down and family violence), medical conditions (a heart defect, a contagious lung disease and cerebral palsy) to different
family compositions (adoption and an absent father). There is background information about the theme of each story with examples for discussion topics.
