  • First released on September 1, 1853, with subsequent printings lasting until 1864. These were the world's first triangular postage stamps. 
  • The Postmaster General, Charles Bell, chose a triangle to prevent illiterate postal clerks from confusing local colonial mail with rectangular British stamps.
  • Features an allegorical figure of "Hope" seated with an anchor, a ram, and grapevines, symbolizing the primary trades of the Cape Colony. It was engraved by William Humphrys
