Hosta is a genus of perennial plants commonly known as hostas, plantain lilies and occasionally by the Japanese name giboshi. Hostas are widely cultivated as shade-tolerant foliage plants. The genus is currently placed in the family Asparagaceae. The name Hosta is in honor of the Austrian botanist Nicholas Thomas Host. Hostas are widely cultivated, being particularly useful in the garden and indoors as shade-tolerant plants whose striking foliage provides a focal point.

Hosta longipes is native to Japan. It is a small to medium hosta that typically grows in a rounded clump rising to 23cm tall and spreading to 30cm wide. Oval, leathery, glossy, dark green leaves (to 20cm long and 12.5 wide) with deeply ribbed veins emerge in spring and remain attractive throughout the growing season. Funnel-shaped lavender flowers appear in late summer on naked, purple-dotted scapes rising above the foliage mound to 30cm tall. Hostas are eaten by deer, rabbits, voles, slugs and snails, which can cause extensive damage to collections in gardens. Some varieties seem more resistant to slug damage than others. Poisoned baits using either metaldehyde or the safer iron phosphate work well, but require repeated applications.
