Hosta is a genus of perennial plants commonly known as hostas, plantain lilies and occasionally by the Japanese name giboshi. Hostas are widely cultivated as shade-tolerant foliage plants. The genus is currently placed in the family Asparagaceae. The name Hosta is in honor of the Austrian botanist Nicholas Thomas Host. Hostas are widely cultivated, being particularly useful in the garden and indoors as shade-tolerant plants whose striking foliage provides a focal point.

Hosta sieboldiana is a very large hosta growing to 75cm tall and 120cm in diameter. Features large (32.5cm x 25cm), heart-shaped, thick-textured, heavily corrugated, surface-cupped, blue-green leaves and racemes of funnel-shaped, mostly white flowers with a violet tinge on scapes up to 90cm. A dependable and versatile perennial requiring little care. Grown primarily for its beautiful foliage which provides color, contrast and texture to the landscape. Dense foliage crowds out garden weeds. This species is a slow grower and will take several years to reach mature shape. May also be listed as Hosta sieboldiana var. elegans. Hostas are eaten by deer, rabbits, voles, slugs and snails, which can cause extensive damage to collections in gardens. Some varieties seem more resistant to slug damage than others. Poisoned baits using either metaldehyde or the safer iron phosphate work well, but require repeated applications.
