MATTEL AND HOTWHEELS: Mattel, Inc. is an American toy manufacturing and entertainment company founded in January 1945 and headquartered in California. The company has presence in 35 countries and territories and sells products in more than 150 countries. Hot Wheels is an Mattel brand of scale model cars introduced in 1968. It was the primary competitor of Matchbox until 1997, when Mattel bought Tyco Toys then owner of Matchbox. Many automobile manufacturers have since licensed Hot Wheels to make scale models of their cars, allowing the use of original design blueprints and detailing. It makes these cars also popular with adult collectors. In 2002, Mattel closed its last factory in the United States outsourcing all production to China. INTERESTING HOTWHEELS FACTS: Hotwheels cost 69 to 89 USA cents each, when Hot Wheels first appeared in 1968. Today they are still only $1, maybe a little higher, around $1.25.
Hot Wheels made from 1968 to 1977 feature "redlines" or red stripes across the tires. Since they stopped using Spectraflame paint and marking the tires with red lines after 1977, these collectible Hot Wheels are more valuable than today's cars. Some are even worth around $200!
1969 Pink VW Beach Bomb. It's a pink van with surfboards sticking out of the back of it, and if you own one, you have the rarest Hot Wheels collectible there is. While other colors were also produced, the pink one was the rarest of the bunch. It's now owned by collector Bruce Pascal and its value keeps going up. Currently, you can expect to pay $175,000 for one of these toys.
The first Hot Wheels toy car offered was the Custom Camaro®, sold on May 18, 1968 Hot Wheels' official birthday.
Over 130 new variations of Hot Wheels designs are manufactured each year, and these colorful and unique designs are sold in over 150 countries. There are also over 20,000 different models in existence overall, making a complete collection something that's nearly impossible to acquire. According to Matteleight cars are sold every second.
