Sub-titled: "Travels Adventures & Discoveries... Including Four Months' Residence With Dr Livingstone"
Published by: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, London in 1874.
This is a very good complete copy of this edition in the original green cloth binding with the black palm tree scene and black-and-gilt illustration of Stanley and Livingstone's famous meeting to the upper board and gilt lettering to the spine still bright.
Frontispiece and 17 other illustrations - including 4 inserted plates plus maps.
Condition: Fair. Ex library copy, Diocesan School for Girls, Grahamstown. Stamped throughout. Date slips and various inscriptions. Clear tape on spine. Edges of pages discoloured and scuffed.
Requires restoration.
Cover (green board) scuffed. No foxing. Published in the same year as the premium edition (1874), this is one of the first copies of the revised cheaper edition, which remained in print for a further 13 years; and the type remains clear and sharp, which was not the case with the later printings.
