Henry Morton Stanley GCB, Welsh journalist and explorer of central Africa, was born John Rowlands and changed his name after his emigration to the United States in 1859. He became famous for his search for missionary and explorer David Livingstone, for his search for the source of the Nile, and his association with the Belgian King Leopold II (for whom he claimed the area south of the Congo river, thus founding the Congo Free State), and for commanding the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition. He was knighted in 1899.
