STORY: This book sets out to answer puzzles in nature and the environment. Why is there such a neat fit between the coastlines of Africa and South America? Why is Table Mountain flat? Has sea level been constant until now? Is climate change a new phenomenon? Has a day always lasted 24 hours? What causes tsunamis?
For each of the 73 questions there is an explanation, be it geological, mineralogical, astronomical - whatever the field, the evidence is carefully presented and explained, supported by explanatory diagrams, photographs and graphs, so that even those with little knowledge in these fields can understand the processes that have been at work.
TERENCE MCCARTHY is Professor of Mineral Geochemistry at the University of the Witwatersrand. He has wide research interests in the earth sciences, including economic and environmental geology, geochemistry and geomorphology. McCarthy is a leading expert on the geology of wetlands and co-author of the acclaimed book, The Story of Earth and Life (Struik 2005).
