HOW STRANGE? A LARGE 9.6CT GREEN AMETHYST GEMSTONE WITH BEAUTIFUL CUSHION CUT

HOW STRANGE? A GEMSTONE CALLED GREEN AMETHYST. EVERYBODY KNOW AMETHYST IS PURPLE.
"Green amethyst" is actually "green quartz." Amethyst itself is purple quartz. This green quartz is created from heat treating some varieties of quartz, mostly amethyst. This association seems to permit the use of the misnomer. Green heat-treated quartz has its own name, "Prasiolite." Which nobody is familiar with.

AN AWESOME LARGE 9.6 CARAT GREEN QUARTZ GEMSTONE WITH A BEAUTIFUL CUSHION FACETTED CUT. The cushion cut, also called the pillow cut, is essentially a square with rounded corners and sides, like the cushions of a couch. COMES WITH A BEAUTIFUL PERSPEX PRESENTATION CASE AND VELVET BAG.

THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT FROM A SELLER IN SOUTH AFRICA WITH THE COUNTRY OF ORIGEN INDICATED AS AFRICA. IT HAS A VVS (EYE CLEAR) CLARITY WHICH MEANS IT IS FREE OF INCLUSIONS AS SEEN WITH THE NAKED EYE WHICH IT APPEARS TO BE. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS AN HEAT TREATED BUT NATURAL QUARTZ GEMSTONE.

TESTS PERFORMED: SCRATCH TEST: IT DID SCRATCH A GLASS WINDOW PANE WHICH WOULD INDICATE IT IS HARDER THAN GLASS.
(MOHS HARDNESS GLASS 5.5-6.5)
UV LIGHT TEST: INERT NO UV REACTION. (THE UV LIGHT HIT THE ELECTRONS. THEY JUMP AND FALL BACK. THEY RADIATE LIGHT OF A CERTAIN WAVELENGTH WHEN THEY DO WHICH IS SPECIFIC TO EACH ELEMENT IN THE MINERAL. THIS IS CALLED FLUORESCENCE.) ONLY 10% OF GEMSTONES EXHIBIT A FLUORESCENCE AFFECT LIKE RUBIES, SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ, OPALS AND DIAMONDS. GLASS AND ALL NATURAL QUARTZ VARIETIES DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT.
GEMTESTER TEST: NO GEMTESTER TEST PERFORMED.
(These testers separate gemstones from one another based on their thermal conductivity or the rate at which electricity or heat transfers through the stone and are very accurate.)
NO CERTIFICATE SUPPLIED

SIZE: 16,3mm x 12.2mm x 7.8mm

DISCLAIMER: I AM NO GEMSTONE EXPERT. THESE GEMSTONES BELONGED TO A FAMILY MEMBER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY. HE COLLECTED GEMSTONES DURING THE EARLY TWENTY FIRST CENTURY MANY WERE BOUGHT ON EBAY AND OTHERS BY TRAVELLING TO OTHER COUNTRIES. I HAVE TRIED TO VERIFY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE ANY STATEMENTS OR CLAIMS BY DOING SOME THOROUGH RESEARCH AND PRELIMARARY TESTS ON EACH GEMSTONE.

AMETHYST:

In antiquity, the most valuable gems were known as the cardinal gems. They included Diamond, Emerald, Ruby, Sapphire and Amethyst. The only difference between this list and today is that Amethyst no longer appears on the modern list. What happened? The answer is that extensive amethyst deposits were discovered in South America in the early 19th century, and Amethyst was no longer regarded as a rare gem.
Historically, fine Amethyst came from the Ural Mountains in Russia and Idar-Oberstein in Germany, though both of these deposits are now exhausted. Very large deposits were discovered in southern Brazil in the early 19th century, with subsequent discoveries in nearby Uruguay. In the 1950's high quality amethyst was found in Zambia. The Zambian Amethyst has acquired the reputation as some of the finest in the world due to its unusually rich color. In fact the Zambian stones have such a saturated color that some material has to be rejected as too dark, a problem that rarely occurs with South American Amethyst. However, the Zambian amethyst is mainly found in smaller sizes, with stones over 10 carats counting as very rare.
Amethyst occurs in primary hues from a light pinkish violet color to a deep purple color. Many amethyst collectors search out the deepest purples they can find. But while the darker purples are highly prized, you will find they are not as sparkly as the slightly lighter stones.
For a gem which was once regarded as precious as Sapphire, Amethyst is very affordable, even at the higher grades. Most fine Amethyst is very clean and completely untreated and can be found in large sizes. It's quite a durable gem and is suitable for all kinds of jewelry.
