Howard Hodgkin was a British painter known for intensely colored, emotionally charged works that sit between abstraction and representation. Born in London in 1932, he developed a distinctive style using bold brushstrokes, rich layers of paint, and wooden panels whose frames he often painted as part of the composition. Although his paintings can appear abstract, Hodgkin described them as representations of memoriesvisual evocations of places, encounters, and emotional moments rather than literal scenes. His work gained international recognition in the late 20th century, including winning the Turner Prize, and he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Hodgkin became one of Britains most respected painters, celebrated for reinvigorating expressive painting at a time when many artists were moving toward conceptual and minimalist art.
