Why is it called a server? : Although it's pretty much a fast PC and can be used as such, a few things make it a server that you should be aware of: E.g it has no on-board sound card & it has a pretty standard-level graphics display (not powerful enough for high graphics games). The kind of HP add-ons you can buy include e.g. an in-box UPS that allows safe shutdown in case of power failure. Also e.g. the RAM (which is about the fastest you can get these days) can run in "lock step", which is almost like RAID for RAM. Oh yes you can have up to 4 Hard Drives, and it can do RAID with them. It has a good network port & even another one for the HP remote control (that is, if the OS hangs on this server in a branch, you can still get to the machine remotely and e.g. reboot it) Thus all in all a stable machine, ideal for your NAS or other server type applications (or PC, but not ideal as a games machine)
Why are there a few of these machines all over Bob and why am I selling this one? : At the recent Microsoft Tech-Ed, HP ran a fantastic special and sold 600 of these machine in about 2 hours. I, like 599 others, queued and fought for my place in line in order to get one. It's been standing in the box in my study for more than a month now and I realise I don't have the time to play with it. It was an impulse buy and now I want to sell it, probably like a few of the others you find for sale. So there's nothing wrong or "old outgoing tech" or anything about these servers, I just have one too many, new in the box, and it has to go.
