HUGE 86,20CT INDIAN DARK BLUE SAPPHIRE GEMSTONE COLOR ENHANCED
A HUGE 86,20CT (17,24G PLEASE SEE PHOTO MULTIPLY WEIGHT BY 5 TO GET CARATS) INDIAN DARK BLUE SAPPHIRE GEMSTONE WITH A OVAL CUT. STONE NOT IN THE BEST CONDITION: IT HAS SOME SCRATCHES AS SEEN ON PHOTOS.
THIS PARTICULAR STONE WAS BOUGHT IN 2011 FROM A SELLER IN CHENNAI INDIA WITH THE ORIGEN OF THE STONE INDICATED AS INDIA. IT HAS A OPAQUE CLARITY WHICH MEANS YOU CANNOT SEE THROUGH IT. IT WAS ALSO SOLD AS A NATURAL BUT COLOR ENHANCED INDIAN BLUE SAPPHIRE GEMSTONE. COLOR ENHANCEMENT SPECIFICS WAS NOT INDICATED.
THIS SAPPHIRE DID NOT PASS ALL THE TESTS I COULD PERFORM: IT SCRATCHED GLASS EASILY! IT FLUORESCES MOSTLY INERT WITH STREAKS OF RED! (PLEASE SEE PHOTO) HAS A BELOW STANDARD THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY! (PLEASE SEE PHOTO)
UNCLEAR IF A REAL INDIAN BLUE SAPPHIRE GEMSTONE (EITHER NATURAL OR LAB GROWN) AS IT DID NOT PASS ALL THE TESTS I COULD PERFORM: PASSED THE SCRATCH TEST: IT SCRATCHES GLASS EASILY IT IS HARDER THAN GLASS. (MOHS HARDNESS GLASS 5.5-6.5 RUBIES 9.0) UNCLEAR ELECTRON UV LIGHT EMISSION TEST: MOSTLY INERT WITH STREAKS OF RED FLUORESCENCE UNDER UV LIGHT. NATURAL BLUE SAPPHIRES HAS TRACE IRON AND TITANIUM ELEMENTS AND USUALLY SHOW NO UV AFFECT BUT SOME NATURAL BLUE SAPPHIRES LIKE THE CEYLON BLUES CAN SHOW A ORANGE TO RED FLUORESCENCE. A SYNTHETIC BLUE SAPPHIRE USUALLY SHOWS A WEAK TO MODERATE CHALKY BLUE TO YELLOWISH GREEN FLUORESCENCE. (THE UV LIGHT HIT THE ELECTRONS. THEY JUMP AND FALL BACK. THEY RADIATE LIGHT OF A CERTAIN WAVELENGTH WHEN THEY DO WHICH IS SPECIFIC TO EACH ELEMENT IN THE MINERAL. THIS IS CALLED FLUORESCENCE. ONLY 10% OF GEMSTONES EXHIBIT A FLUORESCENCE AFFECT LIKE RUBIES, SAPPHIRE, TOPAZ, OPALS AND DIAMONDS. GLASS AND ALL NATURAL QUARTZ VARIETIES DOES NOT SHOW A UV AFFECT.) UNCLEAR THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY TEST: TESTED THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY WITH A MIZAR PRESTIGE SERIES 2 DIAMOND TESTER. IT MOVED UP THE LADDER FROM STANDARD LEVEL 3 TO LEVEL 5. FOR SAPPHIRES AND RUBIES A LEVEL OF 6 TO 7 IS THE NORM FOR THIS TESTER. (WITH THIS TESTER GLASS AND QUARTZ MAKES NO MOVEMENT.)
SIZE: 32,5mm x 24,0mm x 10mm
DISCLAIMER: I AM NO GEMSTONE EXPERT. THESE GEMSTONES BELONGED TO A FAMILY MEMBER THAT HAS PASSED AWAY. HE COLLECTED GEMSTONES DURING THE EARLY TWENTY FIRST CENTURY MANY WERE BOUGHT ON EBAY AND OTHERS BY TRAVELLING TO OTHER COUNTRIES. I HAVE TRIED TO VERIFY AS FAR AS POSSIBLE ANY STATEMENTS OR CLAIMS BY DOING SOME THOROUGH RESEARCH AND SOME PRELIMINARY TESTS ON EACH GEMSTONE.
INDIAN SAPPHIRES: As the name implies, these sapphires come from India. Indian Sapphire isn't necessarily a category of its own but instead refers to where the Sapphire is sourced. Indian sapphire are the mineral corundum like all other sapphire. Corundum is relatively common in nature, and is completely colourless. Impurities causes the various colour variations in sapphires in particular iron and titanium causes the blue color in sapphires as do chronium causing the red colour in rubies. Sapphires sourced from India have a reputation of being particularly durable. Therefore, they can be used as large gems and do not need a high level of maintenance. Aside from a few scarce exceptions, most of this material will be carving-grade or cabochan-grade, and is not suitable to be faceted like most gems we see. Most of the these sapphires are also known to be opaque.
LAB CREATED SAPPHIRES AND DYED COLOR-ENHANCED SAPPHIRES Corundum was the first gem mineral to be synthesized in the lab by a process known today as flame fusion and flux growth. Synthetic rubies and sapphires are presently manufactured in enormous quantities for both industrial and gem application. Synthetic ones have all the same chemical and visual properties of rubies, and the only way to distinguish between them and natural rubies without lab equipment is to look for inclusions. Lab created rubies are beauitiful and near perfect inclusions free. Most batural rubies will have inclusions. The color and clarity of rubies and sapphires is commonly enhanced by heat treatment and, less frequently, by irradiation. Although not commonly disclosed by retailers, such processes are widely acknowledged within the industry and are probably today the rule rather than the exception. Today, many rubies many of these large Indian rubies and sapphires or emeralds are also color-enhanced by introducing dye into surface reaching fissures to deepen the red or blue or green color of less valuable lighter gemstones. THESE DYED GEMSTONES STILL SELL FOR AROUND $20 PER CARAT.
