Hugo is a 2011 fantasy adventure film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick. The film is not only a tribute to early cinema but also a love letter to the magic of filmmaking.
Set in 1930s Paris, the story follows Hugo Cabret, a young orphan who lives hidden within the walls of the Montparnasse railway station, maintaining its clocks. Hugo's late father (played by Jude Law) was a clockmaker who left him a broken automaton and a notebook. Hugo believes the automaton contains a message from his father, and he works tirelessly to repair it.
In his quest to find the missing parts, Hugo encounters Georges Méliès (played by Ben Kingsley), an elderly toy shop owner, and Isabelle (played by Chloë Grace Moretz), his goddaughter. As the story unfolds, Hugo discovers that Georges is actually a pioneer of early cinema, whose works have been forgotten by time. Together with Isabelle, Hugo sets out to help Georges rediscover his love for film and reclaim his past glory.
Hugo received 11 Academy Award nominations in 2012 and won 5 Oscars, including:
