Hunting book!! - E Cronje Wilmot - Okavango Adventure - memoirs of a game ranger 1971, first edition - Howard, Cape Town - Timmins 254p - illustrated and edited by C. T. Astley Maberly - plastic cover - small tear on top left corner - ex book prize - Internally clean and tightly bound.

This is the autobiography of a man who has spent a lifetime in the wilds. He takes us on crocodile shooting in the mysterious Okavango swamps, relates numerous adventures with buffaloes, lions and leopards and other lesser known game, such as Lechwe and Sitatunga, his account of his mauling by a lion is one of the most vivid chapters in this book and he has much to say about snakes.

Apart from mere entertainment value however he gives us much food for reflection. For instance, his suggestion that the prevalence of Bubonic Plague in Ngamiland and Betchuanaland may result from the intensive persecution of small carnivorous mammals for their skins, thereby permitting an unnatural increase of rodents as carriers, demands serious consideration.

All naturalists, botanists and anglers, as well as those who enjoy the acrid smell of the camp fire and love the African veld, will enjoy this book.
