Family:
Liliaceae (Hyacinthaceae)
Type:
True bulb; deciduous; winter-growing, summer-dormant; flowers in late winterOrigin:
Three species from the Balkans and Anatolia.
Description:
Hyacinths surely have the most sweet scent of any flower. Their range of colours is from dark violet to delft blue, porcelain blue, deep purple to delicate dawn pink and magenta. Pure white is a strong form.In the northern hemisphere, yellow and ruby red are known, but available in limited quantities. They are dificult to grow in warmer climates.
Planting Instructions:
As Hyacinths do not like warm soil, it is not a good idea to plant them next to pathways or in full sun. Hyacinths complement tulips and daffodils especially well.Hyacinths do very well in pots, or even hydroponically. If you have bought a mixed set of hyacinths, it is possible to tell the colours apart by looking at the bulb colour. Pinkish bulbs produce pink flowers, white bulbs, white flowers, and blueish bulbs, blue flowers.
Care:
Hyacinths are completely frost-hardy. Although hyacinths are easy to grow for one season, they cannot be replanted due to our warm climates, except with expert care.
