Offered for sale is a highly collectible and desirable Studio pottery bowl, by internationally acclaimed South African ceramicist Hylton Nel. This is a work made early in his career probably dating to the 1970's or 80's. It is a hand made earthenware bowl with a deliberately naive look evoking folk art and craft pottery made in the 18th or 19th Centuries particularly early English pottery. The bowl is hand made earthenware /slumped or draped over a mould and manipulated to achieve an organic, slightly irregular shape with a broad border/rim which is fluted or rouched. The central roundel is painted with an image of a youthful male with unruly hair flanked by two palm frond .The portrait is reminiscent of Greco- Roman or Etruscan painting. The outer rim of the bowl has a yellow border edged with green and decorated with 8 blue diamond shaped lozenges with mauve/purple borders and feathery extensions. The bowl is signed on the reverse with the artists initials HN inscribed in the clay.
