Offered for sale is a highly collectible and desirable Studio pottery bowl, by internationally acclaimed South African ceramicist Hylton Nel. This is a work made early in his career probably dating to the 1970's or 80's. It is a hand made earthenware bowl with a deliberately naive look evoking folk art and craft pottery made in the 18th or 19th Centuries particularly early English pottery. The bowl is hand made earthenware /slumped or draped over a mould and manipulated to achieve an organic, slightly irregular shape with a broad  border/rim which is fluted or rouched. The central  roundel is painted with an image of a youthful male with unruly hair flanked by two palm frond .The portrait is reminiscent of Greco- Roman or Etruscan painting. The outer rim of the bowl has a yellow border edged with green  and decorated with 8 blue diamond shaped lozenges with mauve/purple borders and feathery extensions. The bowl is signed on the reverse with the artists initials HN inscribed in the clay.

Hylton Nel was born in Zambia in 1941; he holds a BAFA degree from Rhodes and post grad Diploma in Ceramic Design from the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp Netherlands. Since 2002 he has lived and worked in Calitzdorp in the Cape . Hylton Nels' ceramic art is represented by the Michael Stevenson Gallery in Cape Town and by the Fine Art Society in London. Michael Stevenson has published two books on Hylton Nels ceramics to date. He exhibits regularly in London,Edinburgh and elsewhere in the UK .
