Offered for sale is a highly collectible hand made and glazed studio ceramic bowl by famous South African art potter Hylton Nel who resides in Calitzdorp in the Cape. This item is signed on the back with the artists initials HN and dated 16 Aug 1993. The bowl is hand built using a technique called slumping so not thrown on a potters wheel. The clay in leather hard state is draped over a mold and the edges crimped or manipulated to create a deliberately naive and organic vessel. The bowl is bisque fired and hand painted and glazed before the final firing in a kiln. This bowl is made from a buff coloured earthenware tin glazed in a pale caramel colour and hand painted in a dark chocolate brown picking out the veins of the leaf form, the border of the plate and the star like pattern on the reverse. A moss or forest green colour glaze is used as a contrast to decorate the front of the plate with a penumbra of cheerful blurred dots and a colour wash which leaves the leaf form silhouetted against the base caramel colour of the plate. Hylton Nels ceramics are a sound investment and avidly collected both in South African and internationally especially in the UK where he has exhibited regularly for decades through well established upmarket galleries such as Contemporary Applied Arts in London. Hylton Nel is represented by the Michael Stevenson Gallery in Cape Town.
