Offered for sale is striking and quirky ceramic bowl made by internationally acclaimed South African art potter Hylton Nel. This is a hand thrown "slumped" bowl made from earthenware glazed with a thick vitreous bright yellow/buttercup yellow glaze and hand painted with a dark green-black line drawing of a quirky cat artfully posed with its extremities touching the circumference of the bowl. The reverse of the bowl is decorated with abstract sprigs in green. The piece is marked with the artists initials HN ; this mark was used very early in the artists oeuvre ie probably 1980's or 70's . Hylton Nel was born in Zambia in 1941; he holds a BAFA degree from Rhodes and post grad Diploma in Ceramic Design from the Royal Academy of Fine Art in Antwerp Netherlands. Since 2002 he has lived and worked in Calitzdorp in the Cape . Hylton Nels ceramic art is represented by the Michael Stevenson Gallery in Cape Town and by the Fine Art Society in London. Michael Stevenson has published two books on Hylton Nels ceramics to date.
